Game overview

What OpenFront is

OpenFront world map with named nations, flags, trade markers, and the troop slider HUD

OpenFront is a free browser RTS where hundreds of players carve one shared map in real time. You expand into wilderness, annex bots, raise Cities and Ports, form fragile alliances, and eventually spend gold on Atom Bombs, Hydrogen Bombs, or MIRVs. The usual win line is about 80% of non-fallout land; after minute 30, Overtime can lower that bar. Start with the getting started guide, then learn how to play, building timing, and nuclear warfare. Compare picks on the buildings tier list and keep the gold costs tool open while you spend.

Quick start

New to OpenFront? Follow these steps before your first public lobby.

  1. 1

    Open a lobby on openfront.io

Play in any modern browser at the official site — no download required. Pick FFA, a team size, Human vs Nations, or a private lobby, then choose a map you recognise from the maps tier list.

  2. 2

Spawn on plains near a coast

Click a start tile before the countdown ends. Plains expand faster than mountains. A coast gives you a later Port. Full spawn logic lives in getting started.

  3. 3

    Hold the 42% troop curve

Use the attack slider so you do not dump the whole army. Growth peaks near 42% of cap — the how to play page explains the bar, workers, and win line.

  4. 4

Buy a City, then a real Port job

Spend the first 125k on a City when the troop bar tops out. Add a Port only if that water can trade or host warships. Keep the gold costs tool open.

  5. 5

Learn nukes before you buy a Silo

A Silo is 1M gold and does not include a bomb. Read nuclear warfare and v33 notes so SAM coverage is down before the first Atom flies.

FAQ

Wiki FAQ

Quick answers to the most common OpenFront questions.

Where should I start in OpenFront?

Read Getting Started, then How to Play and Controls. Keep the hotkeys tool nearby during your first public games.

Is OpenFront free, and what about Steam?

The browser game at openfront.io stays free. Steam Early Access date is 17 September 2026 with a paid client, offline play, and cross-play — details on the Steam update page and Steam links.

What is the win condition?

Dominate roughly 80% of non-fallout land. After minute 30, Overtime can lower that bar — Overtime. How to Play and Doomsday Clock cover the late clocks.

Which languages are supported?

This wiki is written in English, Français, Deutsch, and Español. The live game itself has a much larger community translation list.

Do I need an account?

No. Guests can join public lobbies. Accounts keep stats, skins, usernames, and (in v33) verified badges. See What Is OpenFront and community links.

Is this an official wiki?

No. This is a fan-made guide site. Confirm patches on [openfront.io](https://openfront.io/), the [GitHub repo](https://github.com/openfrontio/OpenFrontIO), and the official Discord.

Is OpenFront worth playing, and what is Doomsday Clock?

Read the OpenFront review for who the game is for. Doomsday Clock is a rising land-share test after ten minutes of grace, not a shrinking circle. Factories spawn trains, they do not print gold — Trains. Rated queues: Ranked.

Ready to take 80% of the map?

Open the getting started guide for spawn and the 42% troop curve, then jump to controls, the buildings guide, or v33 notes before your next lobby.
