OpenFront Map Tiers

Continents, islands, compact boards, and v33 impassable terrain — named maps, not abstract shapes.

Map Archetype Tiers

Map tiers in OpenFront are archetypes, not a popularity contest. A board can be S-tier for navy players and C-tier for train players in the same public rotation. Use this page to classify the map you just rolled, then spend gold with the building tier list. Labels S–D are defined on the Tier List Hub.

v33 added 22 maps, impassable terrain, and Doomsday Clock land-share waves. Those three changes matter more than a pretty outline. Full patch notes: v33. Water routing: naval play. Locked sides: team games.

Continent and large-land S-tier classrooms

Big landmasses reward Cities, Factories, and long Defense Post lines. Ports still matter on the outer seas, but you can win without being first navy if you hold the interior.

S / A examples: World, North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, East Asia, United States, Russia, China, France, Germany, Pangaea.

Play them as:

  • City-first, then Factory if trains will reach those Cities.
  • Defense Posts on highland and mountain belts, not on every plains border.
  • Navy as a flank, not the entire plan — unless you spawned on a peninsula you cannot leave.

United States and Russia are also impassable-terrain classrooms. Mountains and blocked tiles are not just slow; some tiles cannot be crossed at all. Plan nuke paths and spawn exits before you assume a straight land grab.

Island and water S-tier for Ports

If the screenshot is more blue than green, Port and Warship jump the building list. Factory is often C until you own a real rail on one fat island.

S / A water examples: Oceania, Japan, Britannia, Italy’s long coasts, Iceland, Gibraltar, Amazon river systems, Gulf of St Lawrence, Irish Sea, Levant (three landmasses around Cyprus), Baltics, Caspian Sea, Las Vegas Strip (roads as water, casinos as nations).

Vietnam is a skinny country map that plays like a river-and-coast exam: one player who ignores Ports will watch boats decide the match. Scandinavia is huge and coastal; it sits between this bucket and the continent bucket depending on spawn.

Bring naval play here. First Warship is 250k. Do not fund a 1M fourth Warship before the first City unless the sea is the only front.

Compact boards: faster clocks, tighter gold

Compact maps (and Ranked 2v2’s 50% compact chance) compress every timer. Alliances last about five minutes. Betrayal still applies a 30-second half-defense penalty. The first Atom plan at 1.75M arrives while land share is still in play. Overtime, when it is on, still waits for minute 30 in FFA, but compact boards often decide before that.

Compact / tight examples: Gibraltar, NYC, Iceland, Las Vegas Strip, Finger Lakes, Clearwater Lakes, More than Luck, Branching Paths.

On these boards:

  • City remains S, but the second City may wait if a 50k Defense Post saves the only choke.
  • SAM versus Silo timing is earlier because flight distances are short.
  • Doomsday Clock land-share waves (2 / 4 / 7 / 11 / 17 / 25 / 35% in FFA after a 10-minute grace) punish players who turtle a pretty corner.

Treat compact as A-tier for skilled micro and C-tier for greedy eco copies from World FFA.

Impassable terrain (v33) is its own tier axis

v33 lets mappers mark tiles as truly impassable. That is not the same as mountains being slow. It changes land routes, nuke lines, and which coasts can support an attack.

Maps that teach the feature: United States, Tierra del Fuego, Korea (impassable added on the existing board), plus several v33 country maps built around blocked belts.

How to rank them:

  • S if you like puzzle spawns and can read a blocked mountain as a wall, not a discount.
  • C if you insist on attacking the red outline as if it were plains.
  • Defense Posts become S on the remaining legal chokes, because there may be only one.

Doomsday Clock is not a shrinking circle. After ten minutes of grace, required land share rises in waves. Holding a pretty impassable pocket that is 1% of the map will doom you even if no army can walk in. Expand through legal tiles, not through the wall.

Other named boards worth filing

Keep these in the mental index so a public-queue name is not a surprise:

  • Space / odd continents: Mars, Pluto, Sol (solar system, v33), Deglaciated Antarctica.
  • Regional: Scandinavia, Balkans-adjacent Crimea, Balkhash, Gulf of Guinea, Hecate Strait, NYC, East Asia, Amazon.
  • Arcade-adjacent: Branching Paths, More than Luck (nuke-trajectory clover).

Sol is massive and rewards players who respect distance: Trade Ships and Warships travel forever; a Hydrogen Bomb at 5M is a different tempo than on Gibraltar. Mars and Pluto play as alien continents — still land-share games, still ~80% non-fallout win, still plains / highlands / mountains under the skin.

How to use this list in a real queue

  1. Name the archetype: continent, island, compact, or impassable.
  2. Open building tiers and keep only the columns that match.
  3. If the map is water, keep naval play in the other tab.
  4. If it is Ranked 2v2 or another locked side, assign navy versus city jobs with team games.
  5. If the playlist is Doomsday or a v33 country map, skim v33 so you do not treat the clock as a battle-royale circle.

This page will not tell you a single best map. It will stop you from taking a Pangaea Factory plan into Oceania, or a Gibraltar SAM rush onto Sol where the missile is still flying after the fight on the ground is over. Pair it with the Tier List Hub when you need the S–D legend, and with gold costs when the archetype is clear but the next 125k click is not.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common OpenFront questions.

Is World always the best OpenFront map?

No. World is an excellent continent classroom, but islands, compact boards, and v33 impassable maps all outrank it for navy, micro, or route-puzzle play. Rank the archetype, not the famous name.

What did v33 actually add to the map pool?

Twenty-two maps, including Sol, Russia, United States, France, Germany, China, Vietnam, Scandinavia, and Las Vegas Strip, plus impassable terrain. Details are on v33.

Is Doomsday Clock a shrinking safe circle?

No. After a 10-minute grace period, required land share rises in waves (2 / 4 / 7 / 11 / 17 / 25 / 35% in FFA). A tiny impassable pocket will not save you.

Which maps should navy players queue?

Oceania, Japan, Britannia, Irish Sea, Gulf of St Lawrence, Levant, Baltics, and Las Vegas Strip. Then read naval play and keep Port S-tier on the building list.

How should teams split a continent map?

Usually one player leans Cities and Defense Posts, another leans Port and Warships if there is a real sea. Assign lanes before spawn using team games.
