Building Timing

When each structure is the right purchase

Building at the right time matters as much as building the right thing. A City at 125,000 Gold is excellent value in minute 3 and a waste if your core is already under attack.

This guide tells you when to buy each structure, not just what each one does. For prices, read Gold Costs. For the full build menu, read Buildings.

City: buy when you are hitting the troop cap

A City adds 250,000 troop cap per level. The first one costs 125,000 Gold.

Buy a City when:

  • You keep bumping your troop ceiling and growth is slowing
  • You have a safe interior location away from the front
  • You have enough Gold that the purchase does not leave you defenseless

Do not buy a City when:

  • Your troops are low and the border is active
  • You have no safe place to put it
  • You need Gold for defense right now

Port: buy when you have a coast you can hold

A Port costs 125,000 Gold when no Port or Factory exists. It enables Trade Ships, Transports, and Warships from that coast.

Buy a Port when:

  • You have water access and can defend the surrounding coast
  • Trade routes are viable and you need the income
  • You want naval options for later

Do not buy a Port when:

  • The coast is exposed and could be blockaded immediately
  • You have no water access worth controlling
  • You need the Gold for a City first

Factory: buy when a City or Port sits within ~110 tiles

Factories create train tracks to nearby Cities and Ports. They cost 125,000 Gold on the shared Port/Factory counter.

Buy a Factory when:

  • You have a City or Port within about 110 tiles
  • You want train income from that infrastructure
  • You have already secured the surrounding land

Do not buy a Factory when:

  • No target infrastructure is within range
  • You cannot defend the rail connections
  • You need Port or City first

Defense Post: buy when a specific border needs protection

A Defense Post costs 50,000 Gold for the first one, covers 30 tiles, does not stack, and is destroyed on capture.

Buy a Defense Post when:

  • A specific choke point is under pressure
  • You need to defend a chokepoint, narrow approach, or mountain pass
  • You want to reinforce a border without building a full military

Do not buy a Defense Post when:

  • You can solve the problem with troops instead
  • The post would sit on an unstable front line
  • You need multiple posts but only one location makes sense

Missile Silo: buy only with a full nuclear budget

A Missile Silo costs 1,000,000 Gold. It does not include a free nuke.

Buy a Silo when:

  • You have 1,750,000 Gold for a first Atom package (Silo + warhead)
  • You are in a nuclear game and need deterrence
  • You have a safe location away from the front

Do not buy a Silo when:

  • You cannot afford the first warhead
  • You need the Gold for Cities or defense
  • You are not in a nuclear game mode

SAM Launcher: buy when you see an enemy Silo

A SAM costs 1,500,000 Gold for the first one. SAMs can intercept Atom, Hydrogen, and MIRV warheads.

Buy a SAM when:

  • You see an enemy Missile Silo
  • You have critical infrastructure that needs protection
  • You can afford 1,500,000 Gold without weakening the core

Do not buy a SAM when:

  • No one has nukes yet
  • You cannot afford 1,500,000 Gold
  • You need Cities or Defense Posts more

The timing checklist

Before buying anything, ask:

  1. What problem does this solve right now?
  2. Can I afford it without leaving the core vulnerable?
  3. Is this the right moment, or should I wait?

Gold is flexibility. Spending it on the wrong structure at the wrong time removes options. Saving it preserves them.

Common timing mistakes

City too early: A City on a border you are still pushing can transfer to the enemy when that tile is captured.

Port before defense: A Port you cannot defend is a gift to the first player who lands there.

Silo without the warhead budget: A Silo without a loaded warhead is expensive furniture. Budget the full 1.75M before building.

SAM after the nuke is flying: SAMs take 30 seconds to build. If you wait until you see the missile, it is too late.

Factory too far from infrastructure: A Factory beyond 110 tiles from any target produces nothing useful.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common OpenFront questions.

When should I build my first City?

Buy a City when you keep bumping your troop cap and have a safe interior location. Do not build it on an active border you are still pushing.

Should I build Port or Factory first?

Usually Port first if you have useful water access. Factory needs a City or Port within ~110 tiles to produce income.

How do I know when to build a Defense Post?

Buy a Defense Post when a specific choke point is under pressure and you need to reinforce it with 30-tile coverage. It is destroyed on capture, so place it behind the front line.

When is it too late to build a SAM?

SAMs take about 30 seconds to build. If you wait until you see an incoming missile, it is usually too late to get protection. Start SAMs when you see an enemy Silo.

Can I build a Silo without a nuke?

Yes, but a Silo without a warhead is expensive furniture. Budget 1,750,000 Gold total (1M Silo + 750k Atom) before building the Silo.
