The falling 80% bar after minute 30: when a lead wins and how to attack or defend.

Winning and Overtime

How OpenFront Overtime works

FFA Overtime starts after minute 30 when the lobby has it enabled. Public FFA has defaulted Overtime on since v0.33.13. The 80% non-fallout land win threshold does not stay at 80% forever.

After minute 30, the threshold drops one point every 30 seconds until someone wins or the game ends.

The falling bar table

TimeApproximate threshold
30:0080%
30:3079%
31:0078%
32:0076%
33:3073%
35:0070%
37:3065%
40:0060%

The bar continues falling until someone satisfies the current threshold or the game reaches its maximum length.

When a lead becomes a win

If you hold 80% at minute 30, you win immediately. If no one has 80%, the race begins.

A player at 75% with a comfortable lead may not win until the bar falls to 75%. If the bar drops one point every 30 seconds, that player wins in about 2 minutes and 30 seconds if the lead holds.

The key insight: you do not need 80% after minute 30 if the bar is falling toward you.

Reading the threshold

Watch the UI for the current threshold. The falling bar is not always prominently displayed, so look for:

  • The win condition indicator
  • Any Overtime status display
  • The threshold number in the game clock or status panel

When the threshold is 75% and you hold 74%, you are one 30-second interval from winning if no one takes your land.

Attack, defend, or reroute

If you are ahead and above the falling bar: You may be able to win without attacking. Defend your borders and let the timer work.

If you are ahead but below the current bar: You need more land or you need the bar to fall faster than rivals can respond. Consider:

  • A quick expansion into weak territory
  • Attacking a rival who is even farther below the threshold
  • Waiting if a third party is about to be eliminated and free up land

If you are behind: You need to either catch up to the current threshold or push someone else below it so their land rejoins the pool. Options:

  • Attack the player just above you to take their land before they win
  • Expand into neutral territory if available
  • Target a player who is vulnerable and take enough to push past the threshold

Overtime is not Doomsday Clock

Do not confuse Overtime with Doomsday Clock. They are different systems.

FeatureOvertimeDoomsday Clock
StartMinute 30 in FFA10-minute grace, then rising waves
What fallsThe 80% thresholdNothing falls; share requirement rises
Win conditionHold the thresholdHold enough land share
What drainsNothingTroops and warships if below bar

Doomsday Clock punishes too little land early. Overtime punishes a stalled 80% race later. Read the Doomsday Clock guide for that separate mode.

The endgame calculation

In late Overtime, the math is simple: whoever holds the most non-fallout land when the threshold reaches their level wins.

If you hold 60% and the threshold is 60%, you win. It does not matter that 40% of the map still exists.

This means late Overtime is often decided by who can hold territory through the final minutes, not who can launch the biggest attack.

Common mistakes

Attacking too hard when ahead: If you are above the threshold, defending is often better than overextending. Every attack is a risk.

Ignoring the falling bar: If you are at 75% and the bar is at 78%, you have about a minute to get to 78% or you lose the race.

Forgetting that land rejoins the pool: When a player is eliminated, their land becomes neutral. This can suddenly change who is above the threshold.

Letting a counterattack steal the win: Late-game attacks that fail can cost you the reserve needed to hold your lead.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common OpenFront questions.

When does FFA Overtime start?

FFA Overtime starts after minute 30 when the lobby has it enabled. Public FFA has defaulted it on since v0.33.13.

How fast does the threshold fall?

The 80% win threshold drops one point every 30 seconds after minute 30.

Can I win with less than 80% land?

Yes. After minute 30, you win by holding whatever percentage the current threshold is. If the bar has fallen to 70% and you hold 70%, you win.

Is Overtime the same as Doomsday Clock?

No. They are different modes. Overtime lowers the 80% threshold after minute 30. Doomsday Clock is a rising land-share test that starts after a 10-minute grace period.

What happens when a player is eliminated in Overtime?

Their land becomes neutral and rejoins the usable pool. This can suddenly change who is above the current threshold.
