Gold, trade, troop cap, and when to stop expanding to protect what you have.
Stop treating every available Gold balance as attack money. Stabilize the dangerous border, raise troop capacity, then buy an income route that matches the lobby and map.
The practical opening is not one rigid build order. It is a sequence of checks: Can the border hold? Is troop cap limiting growth? Is the coast safe enough for trade? Are trains available? Are nukes enabled?
The Four Resources Behind a Strong Economy
Gold is the visible currency, but four linked resources decide whether your economy works: Gold flow, troop capacity, safe territory, and attention.
Gold flow pays for structures, upgrades, Warships, and nuclear weapons. Base income is reliable but small compared with a working trade network.
Troop capacity determines how much military strength you can store. Each City level adds a fixed 250,000 to the cap, on top of the territory-based population formula.
Safe territory gives structures somewhere to exist and routes somewhere to run. A cheap building captured at the border is not cheap; it becomes value for the opponent.
Attention is the resource beginners ignore. Every exposed Port, railway, and border demands monitoring. A simpler protected economy often outperforms a larger network you cannot defend.

The Port and Factory formula is min(1,000,000, 2^n × 125,000), where n counts existing Ports and Factories together.
Defense Posts follow min(250,000, (n+1) × 50,000). The sequence is 50,000, 100,000, 150,000, 200,000, then 250,000 for each later post.
Why Defense Is an Economic Investment
Terrain has documented mag values of 80 on plains, 100 on highland, and 120 on mountains. A Defense Post multiplies mag ×5 and speed ×3 within 30 tiles.
That bonus does not directly add Gold. It reduces the troops, attention, and replacement spending needed to hold the same border.
Place a post where its 30-tile zone covers a real approach. A cheap post in the interior can be economically useless if the contested edge remains outside its range.
Gold Income and Population Math
Human players receive a documented base 100 Gold per tick. Bots receive 50 per tick, with the lobby’s Gold multiplier applied.
At the 10-tick-per-second cadence, base human income is about 60,000 Gold per minute before trade and other effects.
That baseline cannot fund every early idea. One City costs a little over two minutes of base income by itself if no other Gold source or starting balance is involved.
Population cap is not simply proportional to land. The formula combines a diminishing territory term with City level × 250,000 bonuses.
Troop growth also slows as current troops approach the cap. A City can restore growth headroom when the existing cap, rather than Gold, is limiting expansion.
Choose the Right Income Engine
Use Ports when the route is valuable and defensible
Trade ships settle Gold when they arrive at Ports. Their revenue rises with distance through a sigmoid plus a linear distance term.
Long routes pay more per arrival, but they expose ships to more water and more opponents. Distance is useful only when the route survives.
Use Factories when trains are available and the land network is safer
Trains are documented for single-player and private lobbies. A Factory, Cities, and railway connections form a land trade network.
A train visit pays 35,000 Gold at an allied City, 25,000 at a teammate City, or 10,000 at your own City before the long-route visit penalty.
Trains cannot be sunk by Warships, but their stations and rails still depend on safe land.
Use Cities when capacity is the bottleneck
A City is not a direct Gold generator in the same way as a Port arrival. Its fixed troop-cap increase creates military and growth capacity.
Cities also serve as train stations, so a City can support both population and rail income in a train-enabled lobby.
A Flexible Opening Plan
Step 1: claim a compact, useful base
Expand enough to create room for a core, one defensible front, and a coast or rail plan. Do not stretch a thin corridor merely to touch every feature at once.
Step 2: identify the expensive border
Find the border most likely to consume troops. Terrain, enemy direction, and chokepoints matter more than equal spacing.
Step 3: buy the first capacity node
A first City costs 125,000 and adds 250,000 troop cap per level. Put it inside territory that a sudden push cannot capture.
Step 4: choose Port or Factory first
Pick the Port first when the coast is safe and routes are promising. Pick the Factory first when trains are available and the land core is more reliable than the sea.
Step 5: protect the route before scaling it
Watch where trade ships travel or where rails must pass. Add protection to the vulnerable route rather than immediately buying another income node.
Step 6: review nuclear exposure
If nukes are enabled, inspect rival infrastructure and your own core density. A Missile Silo costs 1,000,000 and the first SAM costs 1,500,000.
A SAM takes 300 ticks, about 30 seconds, to build. Waiting until a projectile is already incoming is too late.
A Minute-Five Economy Audit
At the five-minute mark, pause mental and answer six questions:
- Is the main border inside useful Defense Post coverage?
- Are current troops approaching maximum troops?
- Is the first trade route actually completing trips?
- Are trains enabled, and is the rail network protected?
- Are nukes enabled, and has anyone invested in a Silo?
- What single purchase removes the current bottleneck?
Common Failure Modes
Fighting every border at once
Repeated frontal attacks consume troops and attention while the opponent’s protected systems keep working. Choose the border with the best terrain or strategic payoff.
Buying two Ports before checking the first route
The second Port-or-Factory node costs 250,000 because of the shared counter. If the first Port’s ships are already dying, doubling down adds cost without fixing survival.
Assuming the first Factory also costs 125,000
It costs 125,000 only when no Port or Factory already exists. After one shared node, the next costs 250,000.
Building trains in a lobby that does not support them
The site references limit trains to single-player and private lobbies. Confirm availability before making a Factory the center of the opening.
Hiding every building in one core
Compact infrastructure is easy to defend conventionally but creates one high-value nuclear target. A Hydrogen Bomb has documented outer reach 100.
Hoarding for a weapon while the border collapses
Saved Gold preserves options only while the state can survive. If a 50,000-Gold Defense Post prevents a core capture, refusing to spend can destroy the larger stockpile plan.
